With your partner, look at your assigned graph from the BBC data set on guns in America. What does the graph tell us? What questions does it raise? Share out with the class. (Assign each partner pair/group of 3 one graph/chart to explain and analyze and share out)
Read the short Slate article on Australia's reaction to a 1996 mass shooting.
Bear in mind that Australia is a nation that is more politically conservative than the US, and also has a "frontier mentality" and traditions of gun ownership and hunting. After you've read the article put your name on the front board on the spectrum of belief of where you fall on the following statements, and be able to justify your position.
"If Australia could institute significant and effective gun control reforms, so can the United States, and we should follow this same path immediately."
"Australia's gun reform efforts are interesting to study, but the path they took is not currently possible (or a good idea) for the United States."
(Write the two statements on opposite ends of the front board; students place their name somewhere along the spectrum between the two, and are called upon to share out).
